By contrast with the hostile disbeliever from enemy territory spotted marauding in Muslim-controlled territory, it is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever kills a non-Muslim who has been granted a guarantee of protection, he shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise even though its scent wafts for as far as one can travel in forty years.” So, while the Daesh propagandists seem to want to give vulnerable Muslims the impression that killing any disbeliever is a blameless activity, the truth appears very different. As indicated in the previous verse from Qur’an and the above hadith, and as reflected in the mediaeval legal texts from which the earlier quotations were taken, either their intention is to mislead, or they are not scholars, or both.
