Then Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “O Abu Jandal, be patient and reflect on the fact that Allah – may He be glorified – has prepared for you and those other powerless Muslims who are with you in Mecca release and a way out. We have concluded a treaty between us and the people of Mecca. We have given them our word on this, and they us; and we will not double-cross them.” The narrator stated that then ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab rushed up to Abu Jandal and, walking alongside him, said, “Be patient, Abu Jandal, for they are merely mushrikeen and their blood is nothing but like the blood of a dog.” The narrator added that ‘Umar brought the hilt of his sword close to Abu Jandal, later telling how “I longed that Abu Jandal should seize the sword and strike his father with it.” However, the man held back from slaying his own father, and the moment passed without further incident.
[…] Then ‘Umar came to Allah’s Messenger ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, are we not Muslims, and are they not associators?” “Of course!” the Prophet ﷺ replied. “Why then,” ‘Umar asked, “should we debase our religion?” So, he said, “I am Allah’s servant and Messenger. I will not go against His command, nor will He cause my downfall.” Then, even years later, ‘Umar said, “I have not ceased to fast, give in charity, to pray, and to free slaves due to what I did, out of fear of the words that I uttered that day, hoping that it would be good for me in the hereafter. […]
