A need exists to teach critical thinking skills & history. The books from which Daesh propagandists took and translated quotations out of context were either complicated legal texts or texts relied on by jurists to deduce the Sharia and to issue legal rulings. The intended readers of those texts highly trained experts who had received years of formal education in all the Islamic sciences. The books were never intended to be given piecemeal to ordinary literate Muslims to read and infer rulings on matters of life and death. Is the solution to the deliberate misuse of standard mediaeval Islamic texts to pretend that they do not exist? Or is it to use real examples like those in this presentation to teach Muslims to recognise some key techniques exploited by extremists radicalise the vulnerable, and so help them to avoid being cynically duped?
